Around two o'clock this morning I woke up. I had been suffering from a head cold all the day before, so I wasn't surprised when I woke up. It's hard to sleep when your head is having plumbing problems. What did surprise me was the noise I heard outside the door. It sounded a lot like Nathan. "No," I thought, "That can't be Nathan. It's two o'clock in the morning." Well, I heard it again and then I heard what sounded a lot like Alynna. "No," I thought, "What I'm hearing is coming outside of the apartment." I waited and hoped. It happened again.
I crawled out of bed and made my way into the living room. The light was on, but there were no children. Then I heard Alynna for sure. I walked into the girls' bedroom to find Nathan playing happily in Alynna's crib! There were toys all over the floor of her bed and they were having a great time. I should have just left them in there, but I didn't. I got Nathan out. He was instantly explaining that he couldn't find his pacifiers in bed. Well, Alynna has pacifiers in her bed, so I guess it was the obvious place to be.
I took him back to his bed while Alynna screamed abandonment. Once he was in bed with his darn pacifier I went back and got Alynna out. She was very upset I left her. I figured she'd go back to sleep quickly if I cuddled with her in our bed. That was the wrong assumption. Her fidgeting and noises actually woke up Brad. He took her out to sleep in the living room.
So, this morning, around seven, I wake up and find Brad still asleep in the living room, Alynna crawling all over his chest and looking out the nearby window, and Nathan is in his bedroom complaining about his hungry tummy.
I've explained before how deeply Brad sleeps at night. Well, I guess this morning Nathan made himself at home right under his daddy's nose. When Brad had come back to the bedroom to get ready for church I went back into the living room and found a small baggie of shredded wheat in pieces on the floor. That hadn't been there just ten minutes before when I found Brad still asleep, so it was decided that Nathan must have found the baggie of food in Brad's backpack and Alynna had done the rest while Brad was getting ready for his day.
Now, that was just the beginning. All this happened while Brad was sleeping in the living room and I was asleep in the bedroom. Nathan found the new boxes of batteries and put them in an empty cup for safe keeping. He took the battery charger off the wall. Then he must have decided he was hungry. The kids know how to get the easy-to-reach fruit from the counter, but no. It was not to be. Instead he found the kitchen sheers, cut off the wrapper of an ice cream Popsicle, went to sit in his little booster chair, and the boy ate the entire Popsicle in peace for breakfast.
At first, when I found the empty ice cream wrapper I frowned as I asked Nathan, "Nathan, did you have ice cream for breakfast?" He gave me his best ashamed face and shook his head no... and then he nodded yes.
Brad and I were bemused, to say the least, as to the "damage" he caused this morning. Brad encouragingly stated that we had very independent children.
You see, this is why I get up at six in the morning. It's to protect my ice cream from two year olds.
However, now I'm at home with the two babies and we're all suffering from head colds. Maybe I should have an ice cream now too for medicinal purposes.
