I don't miss living in a third story apartment. However, I do miss the built-in workout. Now that I'm not nursing and I live on the first floor I'm really having to look for ways to stay active. I tried running in the morning, but I spent the rest of the day tired, because I had to get up early enough for running, shower, computer, and breakfast before the kids woke up. So I ran out of steam. Then I thought maybe I could run when Brad came home, but that never worked out either. I just don't like having to take an extra time out of my day to leave my busy routine and do something boring like running.
So today I thought of the answer. I played with my own children. I know, it's a novel idea, but let me explain. The two older kids will often go outside to play in the playground. The playground is equipped with swings, a jungle gym, a slide, and a bench. The two older ones played and I even took Alynna downstairs. Alynna was so excited to be outside! I usually have her inside with me while I clean the house or catch up on paperwork. So, all three children played while I ran up and down the stairs until my legs cramped up. That didn't take long. I guess I'm out of shape. Then I began to rack my brain for other ideas. I jumped up and down the picnic table. I ran up and down the slide.
After a few minutes the kids began working out with me. We took turns jumping and running. It was really quite fun. I even made a fool of myself in my burning-energy-hyperness and played on the swing like I was swimming on my stomach. I tried lunges between pushing Nathan on the swings, but that didn't work out. I tried doing jumping jacks while pushing Nathan on the swings, but I've had three children, so jumping jacks were out.
Now I'm all pumped up with energy. I even googled "exercises for the playground" and found all kinds of sites with good ideas on them.
We'll see if I can maintain the more active play a little every day. It made me feel great since all those endorphins were pumping through my body. Plus, I got to be silly with my kids, which I hardly ever take the time for.
