We began the slow process of potty training Nathan sometime a few months ago. He caught onto the pee part pretty quickly. There were many accidents, but it wasn't long before he began running to me to tell me he needed to go. Well, "pretty quickly" is all relative. Kaeley wasn't completely potty trained until a month before she turned five. I kid you not. The girl knew how to use the system. She would work herself to a prize, get the goal, and go right back to her old habits. She was a pain in the you know what, excuse the insinuated pun. It was a nightmare.
So, anyway, Nathan was not getting the more messy aspect of potty training. One day last week he stayed dry all day long. The next day? Four awful poop-filled diapers. I almost cried at one point. I really did. If he didn't get this thing right by summer I would have three children in diapers! Who does that!?! The pressure was huge for me, but there was nothing I could. It's Nathan's lesson to learn.
Well, this past weekend, while at a women's retreat with the church, I prayed earnestly that God either does the potty training for me and help Nathan get what he needs to do or he gives me the patience to let it all (figuratively speaking, of course) roll off my back like water. I get back from the retreat knowing that it will eventually work itself out, but still prayed for, what I called, "supernatural potty training".
I haven't changed a diaper since before I left for the retreat! He's pooped in the toilet twice, keeps dry for most errands out of the house, dry for several nights, and can stay dry at home! I'm not saying this is the end-all of him potty training. I'm sure we'll have a few steps backward along the way, but what a huge step in the right direction!
I seriously give God all the glory, because the timing for that seemingly over-night change was so dramatic it can't possibly be a coincidence. Sigh. I love trusting in God.
We'll keep you posted on the progress.
