Glamping

In September the family went tent camping at San Diego's KOA Metro. We arrived on a Wednesday when nearly the entire urban camp site was empty. Because of the size of our family we were moved to "group camping" which turned out to be a sliver of dirt at the way back of the site. This was fine with us when we were the one of the few families camping. The children would hop on scooters to visit one of the two playgrounds on the premises. We visited Legoland, swam at the local pool, and enjoyed the few activities offered that particular weekend. Well, one day we came "home" to find all the other slits of dirt occupied by series groups! As it turns out we accidentally booked a buy-one-get -one-free weekend and everyone and their mother and their screaming baby was now squooshed into this KOA camp site! I now had another family literally a few feet from our heads and a drunk on the other side who almost fell into the fire in the middle of the night due to his drunken stupor. It was enough to make your skin crawl.

However, we were intrigued by the little cabins available. We love San Diego. I casually asked the cashier before we left if the weekends were always like "this" (meaning does this place usually turn to the ghetto on the weekend) but she assured me it was because of the promotion. "What does this weekend in February look like?" After hearing the answer, "Oh, it's a ghost town." I handed over the credit card and we had booked a cabin for February.

When our good friends, the Crawfords, found out we were going again they decided to go too. They RV it.
This time we turned away from the sliver of dust for group tenting and unpacked at our two-room cabin. It was such a treat! Brad unpacked the car in a hurry, like a man on a mission (watch out), and within ten minutes he was walking around looking for something to do. The absence of tent pitching was indeed a freeing experience.

I made our dinner that night via a crock-pot plugged into an outlet near one of the children's bunk beds. And so began our "glamping" experience.

I now want to go camping with our cabin all the time!
