Monday morning Kaeley had a peach that was on the crunchy side and a piece of toast. I could see her inspecting her food before taking a bite. She was strategizing about where to bite next. Her loose tooth was finally getting to the point of annoyance for her. It would often crash into her other teeth as she was chewing or food would force it into a painful position.
After breakfast she finally gathered the nerve to come to me, "Mommy, I'm ready for you to pull this tooth out. It's bothering me!" I was so excited! The tooth was almost completely exposed, which I don't remember from my days with loose teeth. I began fiddling with it using my bare fingers, but was reminded that if you use a paper towel you get a better grip on the slimy thing, and you're a bit less connected from the "pop" sound as the tooth is yanked out of position. Yuck. So I got my piece of paper towel. I was excited, grossed out, and nervous all at the same time, and I began to giggle. This made Kaeley nervous. I'm telling you, that kid doesn't trust me!
It didn't take much and the tooth was out of her mouth. She was a bit surprised and a bit revolted as she began to lightly bleed. After she got over the grossness she ran to look at herself in the mirror. Well, after that we had to call Daddy at work and Grannie to tell them the happy news. Then it was time to get dressed. Kaeley was just sure her clothes would fit better now that her tooth was out.
That night Brad helped her put the itty bitty tooth in a tooth-pillow I had made. She was so excited about her first visit from the tooth fairy she could hardly wait to go to bed! When Brad tucked her in she insisted he leave the closet door open, because that's where the tooth fairy lived. He told her she did not live in the closet, but Kaeley said, "Yes, she does, Daddy! I've seen her face before!" Well, it was finally decided that they would leave the window cracked open.
At nine thirty in the evening Brad told Kaeley it was time to turn out the light and go to sleep. (Kaeley reads, colors, or listens to her iPod until unseemly hours for young children.) She clapped her hands over the cheeks and whispered, "Thank you!"
The tooth fairy later snuck in and exchanged the tooth for four quarters. Kaeley now get a "paycheck" every week if she meets her end of the bargain. We wanted to separate the one dollar bill "paycheck" from the excitement of the tooth fairy, so we gave her four quarters.
That morning she woke up very excited! She came into our bedroom to show us her prize money. However, since they were four coins, and she doesn't understand money yet, she gave a quarter to each member of the family! Don't worry; after I explained that four quarters were the same as one dollar we all gave our money back to her piggy bank.
The unfortunate part of all this is that the tooth fairy ended up dropping the tiny tooth somewhere in the vicinity of Kaeley's bed and we have yet to find it. I had been hoping to tuck it away in her scrapbook, because it was so tiny. Oh well, she has another loose tooth already. I'll try to save that one when it falls out. Sigh. My baby is growing up so fast. I better start filling out college applications for her.
Oh, and I did try many angles to get a good picture of her windowed smile, but it was impossible. Her lip curls right over the window and makes it impossible to see.
